Oct 10, 2023
Kiev [Ukraine], October 10: The commander of Ukraine's Territorial Defence Forces has been replaced by President VolodymyrZelensky for the second time since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Zelensky on Monday appointed Major General AnatoliyBarhylevych to lead the local reserve defence forces, replacing the dismissed Major General IhorTantsyura.
A presidential order published on Monday announced the appointment of Major General AnatoliyBarhylevych as the new commander. A separate order announced the removal of General IhorTantsyura, who had been in the post since May 2022. Tantsyura had led the Territorial Defence Forces since May 2022. No reason has been given for his dismissal from the post as of Monday afternoon.
The Territorial Defence Forces, which are part of Ukraine's military, are primarily responsible for organizing defences away from the front lines. The Territorial Defence Forces grew out of volunteer reserve groups during fighting in eastern Ukraine that began in 2014, and have since been reorganized several times. Barhylevych was involved with building up the forces.
