Pope Francis' condition continues to improve, kidney failure gone
Feb 27, 2025

Vatican City [Italy], February 27: This morning, February 27 (evening, February 26, Italian time), the Vatican Press Office announced an update on Pope Francis' health.
According to Vatican News, Pope Francis continued to show signs of improvement over the past 24 hours. Accordingly, the mild kidney failure that had been monitored for the past few days has subsided.
Chest CT scan showed normal progression of pneumonia. Blood tests later in the day confirmed the improvement noted earlier.
Pope Francis is still receiving high-flow oxygen but no longer has asthma-like respiratory symptoms. He continues to receive respiratory physiotherapy.
The Vatican said that despite a slight improvement, the prognosis remains cautious. In the morning, the Pope received Communion and continued his work in the afternoon.
Earlier, an anonymous Vatican official told Reuters on February 26 that Pope Francis was still conscious and could eat and move normally in his hospital room.
Pope Francis (89 years old) was hospitalized in Rome (Italy) since February 14 due to bronchitis and then double pneumonia. Up to now, he has spent 13 nights at Gemelli Hospital, the longest inpatient treatment since he became Pope on March 13, 2013.
At a press conference on February 21, doctors in charge of Pope Francis' health said he would remain in the hospital "at least through next week" and that although his life was not in danger, he was not completely out of danger.
Since becoming head of the Vatican in 2013, Pope Francis has been hospitalized several times for medical conditions. In 2021, he had surgery to remove a section of his intestines due to intestinal stenosis. In recent years, Pope Francis has also used a cane or a wheelchair due to ligament problems.
